Message from Advisory Council President

Six years ago, Sheryl Ott gathered a group of like-minded individuals to form the first Bridge the Gap College Prep Advisory Council. The group consisted of mothers living in Marin County that recognized the disparity between their children’s education and the education of children living in Marin City. What started as a working lunch among friends in Sheryl’s living room, and later with the leadership of Mary Jo Schaffer (President for the past two years), the Advisory Council has evolved into an active group with over 50 members who support Bridge the Gap College Prep in a myriad of ways.

Advisory Council members strive to extend
the Bridge the Gap College Prep message and mission,
believing that education can fundamentally change lives
and thereby change our community.

The Advisory Council’s focus and advocacy span from critical fundraising activities to direct engagement with students and their families. The council is the backbone of our yearly fundraiser, Vines and Vision, with members lending their talents and connections to widen our community support, (this year raising almost $427,000). Some members tutor and mentor students, while others help fulfill needs identified through Bridge the Gap College Prep. These needs have ranged from organizing a festive Back to School Night, to assisting students in planning their pre-prom party, to helping with graduation festivities. Through the Advisory Council’s broad based involvement and collective efforts, members extend the BTGCP message and mission, believing that, “Education can fundamentally change lives and thereby change our community”.

We are truly grateful for the multi-faceted support of our Advisory Council who are helping to profoundly change our students’ lives.

If you’d like to get involved with the Advisory Council, please contact me at bonniebrown2@mac.com. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you, bring you to one of our meetings, give you a tour of our facilities, and introduce you to some of our wonderful students, Advisory Council members and BTGCP staff.
